YOUTH SAILING

MISSION STATEMENT:

 

To teach introductory sailing skills in a controlled, safe, fun and educational environment. To promote safety and knowledge for a lifetime of boating enjoyment and encourage the highest level of seamanship in all aspects of sailing.

 

PROGRAM

The KYC Youth Sailing Programs offers a 6 training sessions of approximately 3 1/2 hours each. Some classroom time is required although most of the instruction takes place on the-water.  Numerous mentorship opportunities are also offered throughout the year with knowledgeable skippers of KYC.

Session I (Dates TBA)- an introduction to sailing for those with little or no small boat sailing experience. The classes cover parts of the boat, rigging and the basic elements of boat handling and seamanship. Participants successfully completing the Session I class will learn to rig and sail a small boat on a protected body of water in light to moderate winds.

 

Session II (Dates TBA)- emphasizes more advanced techniques leading up to racing.  Students will learn to adjust many sail controls, get more speed out of their boats and learn to sail around a course.

 

PREREQUISITES

Age: 10 to 18

Experience:

No prior boating or sailing experience is required. (Completion of Session I or prior sailing experience before enrolment in Session II is recommended.)  

Membership: Membership in the Klamath Yacht Club is not required.

 

Equipment:

The participant is responsible for obtaining a Coast Guard approved type III Personal

Floatation Device (PFD). A PFD must be worn at all times. Participants should bring a change of clothes and an enthusiastic attitude to every class. Sailboats will be provided by KYC.

 

Physical ability:

Participants must be able to swim 25 yards while wearing usual sailing attire and an additional 25 yards after removing the PFD, for a total of 50 yards.

 

Transportation: Transportation to and from the course is the responsibility of the participant's parent or guardian. The participant must be picked up promptly at the end of each session.

 

INSTRUCTORS

A qualified sailing instructor will be present during all activities. Personnel will also be present who are certified in basic First Aid and CPR.  Safety boats and crew will be nearby whenever participants are sailing.

 

ENROLLMENT

Course tuition is TBA. KYC members and their immediate family will receive a TBA discount.  The participant and/or a parent or guardian must complete and sign the enrollment form and medical release form.  Class size is limited to 10 participants per course on a first-pay-first enrolled basis.

 

Makeup Session(s):

Makeup sessions can be scheduled as needed, subject to instructor discretion and availability. Certificates of completion will be awarded at a September Club event.

 

Note: Dinner will not be provided. Each participant is encouraged to eat a healthy meal before class, bring a snack to enjoy during the mid-session break and water to drink throughout the session
